Over the last few months I’ve been able to fulfill a goal I’ve had for a long time – to dance on the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Can Can Line. The can can line is a fully volunteer dance troupe that brings the colourful history of the Klondike to life during Whitehorse’s legendary winter festival and for many girls it a bit of a right of passage as well. We have a diverse and talented group of awesome ladies this year who are all new to the line – 8 dancers all with “Rendezvous names” (mine is Ankles Up Amber); a kick-ass choregrapher, Brownwen Kettleson (Bang Bang Bronwen); and the most dedicated manager a girl could ask for, Kate McConnell (Kabin Fever Kate). Tonight is the Can Can Kick-Off where we unveil all of our new dances to the Yukon public. It takes place at the Westmark Whitehorse in the Ballroom from 7-9 pm and it’s free. We’ll be performing Candyman by Christina Aguilera in honour of the 70th Anniversary of the Alaska Highway, the Cell Block Tango from Chicago (and yes, we will be singing it), and of course the Can Can (complete with an encore). If you have a chance you should come by, and if you can’t make it tonight we’ll be dancing all over town during the week of Rendezvous. Wish us luck!
