My joint show with Celia McBride, JUXTAPOSITION, opened on Friday at Arts Underground. It is up for the next month. For those of you who can’t see the work in person I wanted to share a digital version of my portion of the work for you here.
My work for this show focused on five Canadian national parks (Yoho, Banff, Kluane, Pacific Rim, and Nahanni). It involved creating a stylized version of images from these parks with a matte acrylic medium mixed with different textural elements. I wanted each piece to have a different texture – one for example has glass beads, one ground up pumice. I then coloured the pieces as brightly as possible with watercolours, shaded them with charcoal, and then adding details in ink. It’s a very new style for me, but I’m excited with how stylized and vibrant the pieces are. In fact, I’m tempted to expand this into a large project that does one piece for each of the 44 Canadian national parks. What do you think: crazy or a good idea?
