I’ve got the exciting job this year of building the effigies for Burning Away the Winter Blues. I made a frost giant effigy for them a few years ago and I’m so excited to be back in the saddle again – literally – this year I’m creating a stampede of eight-legged horses based on Sleipnir, Odin’s amazing eight-legged horse from Norse mythology. It’s a fun challenge as it was chosen to tie in both the Viking and Chinese traditions (as this year is the Year of the Horse).
To go along with the effigies that are starting to take shape in my studio, I ran a Kid’s Kreate workshop at the Yukon Arts Centre today where the young participants created their own versions of Sleipnir who can join the stampede of effigies during the March 22nd event. I built them a set of templates and a sample and then let them at it. It was like watching creativity literally explode across the room – sparkles, tissue paper, old copies of National Geographic, feathers, paint, crayons, pencil crayons, and pipe cleaners went everywhere – and the results were simply fantastic.
