I have just returned from a week on Cortes Island with Robert Bateman and a group of seven other artists from around the world. I was taking part in a master artists workshop organized by Hollyhock Learning Centre. It was incredible. Robert Bateman is now 84 years old and he has a crazy amount of energy – he would teach from 9:30 in the morning until 9:30 at night each day. He took us through demonstrations; taught us art history; shared his sketchbooks with us; introduced us to his favourite artists; walked us through his own artist career; critiqued our work for us; showed us what inspired his ideas and famous works; taught us photography; took us on a nature walk; and threw in generous helping of nature interpretation and activism. It was an amazing and inspiring experience – I can’t wait to put some of the ideas that it fostered into action.
