Over the course of the last week I was the visual artist for Arts in the Park. I lucked out with getting one of the nicest, sunniest weeks of their programming this summer so far. I spent large chunks of the lunch hour demo slots teaching piles of kids to paint, but I still found a enough time to complete a piece over the five days as well. It, along with my Celebration of Swans poster piece, are forming the […]
I have spent the last four days in the sun, wind, and rain with a group of fellow artists for Whitehorse’s second annual Plein Air Festival. Each day we were assigned a location to paint in – the SS Klondike, the Whitehorse Wharf, the grounds of the Whitehorse Visitor Reception Centre, and the front yard of Yukon Artists at Work – and between 11 am and 4 pm would set up outside and create a piece. With ten artists hard […]
Recently the Yukon Conservation Society brought five visual artists together for a two day residency in Miles Canyon outside of Whitehorse. We spent the time painting plein air, inspired by the canyon’s cultural and natural history, and interacting with the public as they walked the surrounding trails to check out the artists at work. The work we each created will be featured in a show at Rah Rah Gallery for the month of August. It will open on Wednesday from […]
Recently I spent a week as the visual artist for Arts in the Park, a free summer lunch-time arts festival the has been running in downtown Whitehorse for 18 years. The timing was perfect as I wanted to create a piece for my friends’ Derek and Jill’s wedding which took place this last weekend. In the end I got their piece created along with a second one that I’ve been hoping to get around to for a while now. The […]
The Atlin Arts and Music Festival is always my favourite festival of the year and the most recent instalment failed to disappoint. And how could it with acts like Gord Downie, the Sadies, Danny Michel, Alex Cuba, and the Gord Grdina Trio gracing the stages while the youngest festival goers played in the custom built sand pile and Lego pit and the rest of us lay in the grass and soaked in the magnificent views? This year Yarn Bomb Yukon […]
To kick-off the Discovery Day weekend this year the Yukon Conservation Society has recruited six Yukon artists to create art along the trail between Miles Canyon and Canyon City. The six of us will be creating work inspired by the natural environment and history of the landscape that will be showcased in a show in the fall. If you are in town you should come by on Friday or Saturday to see what we’re up to and keep us company.
I’ve just returned from ten days at the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik. It was an absolutely amazing trip filled with friends, adventures, parties, art, learning and fun. Every day was jam-packed. One day I was creating art bras and modelling in a fashion show; another I was learning to sew seal skin from an elder (she made me rip it out until I did it perfectly); I learned how to mold wax to create metal casts for jewelry […]
I, and my puppy Shiloh, just spent the last week as the visual artist for Arts in the Park. Arts in the Park is a summer long music and arts festival, that highlights a musical act every weekday lunch hour all summer long. At the same time they feature a visual artist who creates work for a full week of the festival’s run. It was an amazing experience – creating work for the public in the sunshine every day (and […]
I’m excited to let everyone know that I’ll be one of the diverse set of artists taking part in the 25th anniversary of this year’s Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, Northwest Territories in July. The lineup of participating artists has been released on the festival’s website. You can check out who I’ll be hanging out with for ten days this summer here.
This coming weekend, September 28th, 29th, and 30th, Culture Days will take place across Canada. Whitehorse has a huge range of activities taking place across the city, many of which I’m really looking forward to taking part in. Yukon Artists@Work will have a set of demonstrations as part of the festivities and I will be running one of these. I will be doing a mixed media texture demonstration from 11 am to 1 pm at the Yukon Artists@Work Gallery at […]
