I made my most elaborate gingerbread house ever! The whole thing is made from scratch and is completely edible. The skating rink and the gnarled tree are made of sculpted candy canes (which involved some burned finger tips); the evergreen trees are sugar cones rolled in white chocolate coloured green and then decorated; and the rest is mountains of gingerbread, icing and candy.
For those of you who follow the blog, you’ll know that holidays are pretty big in our house. As I was looking back over photos from the last while I realized I hadn’t shared anything from last Christmas (gingerbread and cookies galore), Easter (Ukrainian Easter eggs and a visit from the Easter Platypus – because bunnies don’t lay eggs), or Halloween (we do take our pumpkins seriously around here). So in no particular order, here are a few glimpses to […]
For those of you who are long-time followers of the blog, you will know that between the time my daughter Inara was born and now my posting has been sporadic at best; something about managing a baby/chasing a toddler around taking up all my spare moments (and then some). Now that Inara is two-and-a-half I’m finally finding some time to get back to the blog. And I’m realizing that there are a few things that I would normally have shared […]
After my gingerbread house collapsed last year I swore off making another. I have terminally bad luck when it comes to gingerbread houses – they collapse; they fall apart; the candy all slides off; they have walls or roofs that fall down; the gingerbread burns, or warps or is too thin or too thick – ultimately it ends in frustration and anger and tears every time. I can make super elaborate cakes but gingerbread has always been beyond me – […]
My younger brother, Craig Church, got married to the amazing and talented Angela Chang on Saturday. The wedding was wonderful and beautiful (and as with all weddings a fair amount of chaos and work in the lead-up). I got the honour of putting together their wedding cake. It was a lot of work – not that this came as a surprise – and as it was the first wedding cake I’ve ever created it was a bit stressfull as well […]
I make a cake each year for my friend Christina’s birthday. This year she turned 30, so I let her dictate what her cake would look like. She asked for a dinosaur cake. More specifically a dinosaur skeleton. While actually she asked for something like the dinosaur from the start of Jurassic Park that they image with ground-penetrating radar (the internet refuses to provide me with an image – if you don’t know what I’m talking about you’re going to […]
I spent yesterday putting together a cake for an eleven year old’s birthday. His favourite hockey player is Iginla, so I sculpted a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey out of cake for him. The cake was huge – they wanted it to feed thirty people – and they wanted it all piped, no fondant – so by the time I was finished my hand was very tired (filling a cake that size with drop stars takes a lot of frosting). I loved the finished […]
I wanted to share a cake commission I just finished up for a birthday party. The request was for the cake to feature Frankie Stein from Monster High (luckily Monster High has it’s own wiki loaded with all the information a cake designer could want to create the perfect cake). I painted the character and words onto the cake, along with the pink stripes down the sides. I then created mini Monster High logos out of fondant and spaced them […]
Today was my brother Craig’s 30th birthday, and although he is literally on the other side of the country (in Fredericton, New Brunswick) we wanted to celebrate it with him. When his wife-to-be, Angela, and he asked me to make their wedding cake for next summer the first concept that jumped to my head was a Muppets cake (Craig loves the Muppets)…it was immediately vetoed. So I thought I’d make him a Muppets birthday cake instead (mwa ha ha…I still […]
I had to share a follow-up to yesterday’s blog post. My puppy Shiloh really liked the icing roses I made yesterday and I had to share the results with you. For reference she has been feeling very ill for the last few hours.
