I made my most elaborate gingerbread house ever! The whole thing is made from scratch and is completely edible. The skating rink and the gnarled tree are made of sculpted candy canes (which involved some burned finger tips); the evergreen trees are sugar cones rolled in white chocolate coloured green and then decorated; and the rest is mountains of gingerbread, icing and candy.
Inara loves foxes…she really, really, really loves foxes. So when we were setting up her bedroom the most logical thing to do was to make sure there were some foxes included. When I was searching around the internet to help me brainstorm ideas for the design elements, I came upon this kit for a knitted fox head. It was absolutely perfect for Inara’s room, so I picked one up. It knit up super fast (the joys of big needles and […]
One of the true joys (or headaches, depending on your point of view) of a new house is getting to create all of the fun elements that make it truly your own. One of these little touches that we’ve created in our place is our map wall. We put a map of the wall up on the wall of our den and then populated it with photos from our various trips linked to ribbons and pins showing where the photos […]
About a year and a half ago we bought a new house – it was becoming quickly apparent that our old place was not designed to hold two full art studios, two adults, a dog and a rapidly growing toddler. Inara’s room in the new house came equipped with two closets – which, at the moment at least, is one more than she needs. Instead of turning it into storage, we decided it made much more sense to make her […]
I had a really fun experience this afternoon. The SS Klondike National Historic site was replacing the beautiful hemp rope used to rig the ship and they donated it to the Yukon Transportation Museum to use for programming and/or display. The Museum, in turn, decided to use some of the rope to run a wreath making workshop and I was one of the lucky participants who got to take part. It was the perfect style of workshop for me – […]
I found some time recently to pull together a personal, just-for-fun art project: a Lego version of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It was a wonderful experience (despite the sore thumbs resulting from assembly) as it combined two things I love: the art of Vincent Van Gogh (I love his work so much that I dragged my husband and a crew of friends to Arles in Southern France – not that they were complaining – to hang out where he […]
Late last year I sat down with my father to re-design my art studio. We created a set of drawings and then I headed out to buy a pile of wood and supplies. Over the Christmas holidays my husband, father, brother, sister-in-law, and I built shelves and a deep work desk. Then I had to sit down and sort through all of my supplies, books, artworks, etc. That took a long time, a very long time (although in my defence […]
Tyler and I sat down on Friday afternoon to carve pumpkins in advance of all the trick-or-treaters banging on our door (and causing Shiloh intense amounts of the stress – Halloween is the only time all year that she has to wear a leash inside the house). We decided to be some of our favourtie characters for this year’s creations, and ultimately settled on Tintin and Snowy and Toothless, from How to Train Your Dragon. I thought I’d share the […]
Cafe Balzam, the restaurant based out of the Takhini Hotsprings, came up with a fun plan the other day: recruit local artists to re-imagine the restaurant’s formica tables armed with nothing more than a rainbow of sharpie markers. I was one of the artists asked to take part in this Elbows Off the Table project and I finished my creation Fox in the Woods earlier this week (after permanently staining my hand blue with my selection of sharpies). The full […]
A group of Yukon artists have come together to create a Skeleton Parade for Whitehorse for Halloween. We’ve been scheming costumes, lanterns, and puppets and we’d love for you to join us. You can find out more here or you are free to simply show up at the event. I hope to see you there!
