I made my most elaborate gingerbread house ever! The whole thing is made from scratch and is completely edible. The skating rink and the gnarled tree are made of sculpted candy canes (which involved some burned finger tips); the evergreen trees are sugar cones rolled in white chocolate coloured green and then decorated; and the rest is mountains of gingerbread, icing and candy.
After my gingerbread house collapsed last year I swore off making another. I have terminally bad luck when it comes to gingerbread houses – they collapse; they fall apart; the candy all slides off; they have walls or roofs that fall down; the gingerbread burns, or warps or is too thin or too thick – ultimately it ends in frustration and anger and tears every time.
