Recently the Yukon Conservation Society brought five visual artists together for a two day residency in Miles Canyon outside of Whitehorse. The Yukon Government created an art calendar featuring the work of a selection of Yukon artists for the recent Arctic Council meetings that took place in Whitehorse. I was honoured to be among the artists who had their work selected. A couple of days ago I received a copy of the calendar in the mail and I wanted to share a glimpse of it with you.
I’ve been creating new work for a diverse set of reasons recently – a plein air painting session in Miles Canyon; a friend’s daughter who calls the High Arctic home; an exploration of the human face; and the opportunity to honour the bravery of those who fight cancer on a daily basis. To kick-off the Discovery Day weekend this year the Yukon Conservation Society has recruited six Yukon artists to create art along the trail between Miles Canyon and Canyon City. The six of us will be creating work inspired by the natural environment and history of the landscape that will be showcased in a show in the fall. If you are in town you should come by on Friday or Saturday to see what we’re up to and keep us company.
