For years I’ve admired the work of the snow carving teams who travel to Whitehorse to compete in the International Snow Carving Competition during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. This year a team of friends and I got to try our hands at snow carving ourselves during the competition. The organizers opened up a recreational category for amateurs to try their hand at the art on smaller blocks than the pros use. We decided to base our carving the glyptodon puppet […]
Well we all survived another season of can can (although the 8 performances between 6 pm and 11 pm on Friday night came close to killing us). I’ve now had a few days to recover and wanted to share a few final images and video with you before I move on to the next thing (which would be the opening reception for JUXTAPOSITION which happens tonight at 5 pm at Arts Underground). Enjoy!
I’ve had a number of people ask me about the can can line’s schedule over the next week and a half. For those of you who have been wondering where you can catch us dancing I have included the details below. Hope to see you at one of the shows: Friday, February 15: Sourdough Sam’s, Mt. Mac, 9:30 pm Frostbite Music Festival, Yukon College, 11 pm (ticketed event) Saturday, February 16: Men’s Curling Bonspiel, Mt. Mac, 8 pm (private event) […]
As promised I wanted to share a few photos with you from Friday’s Can Can Kickoff (thank you to all of you who came out to see the show in person. To give you a sense of the event from our perspective as dancers I’ve thrown in a few from us getting ready. Thank you to Tyler Kuhn for the photography.
Today is the culmination of months of work for the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous can can line. Tonight is the Can Can Kickoff, our big performance to kick-off the forty-something performances we will be taking on for the rest of the month. We’d love to see you out if you live in Whitehorse (it’s free). We’ll be showcasing our five new dances for the crowd at 8 pm in the ballroom of the Westmark Whitehorse (doors at at 7:30 pm). If […]
The souvenir program for this year’s upcoming Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous has just been released and features a photo and story about our can can line. We’ve been rehearsing three days a week in preparation for revealing our five new dances to the world on February 8th at 7 pm at the Westmark Whitehorse at our Can Can Kick-Off. To tide you over to the big reveal in February, here is the photo of us from the program.
Over the last few months I’ve been able to fulfill a goal I’ve had for a long time – to dance on the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Can Can Line. The can can line is a fully volunteer dance troupe that brings the colourful history of the Klondike to life during Whitehorse’s legendary winter festival and for many girls it a bit of a right of passage as well. We have a diverse and talented group of awesome ladies this year who are […]
I suspect that I have chosen to interpret this week’s photo challenge of abundance quite differently from most others. I have chosen to capture the abundance of snow and cold which dominated the last week’s Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Celebrations. For those of you unfamiliar with the Rendezvous it is a week-long winter festival that celebrates the lengthening of the days, the onset of spring, and our gold rush history. To say it has character would be the understatement of the […]
What does the Yukon and Moulin Rouge have in common? If you guessed a penchant for alcoholism you wouldn’t be far off, but the real answer is can-can dancers. That’s right, my home territory loves our gold rush history, and as part of that, we love our can-can dancers. The try outs for this year’s can-can line just happened (that’s right can-can dancing is so popular it’s actually incredibly competitve to join the can-can line). I’ve been wanting to join […]
